Doug Palmer has been Mayor of the City of Trenton in 1990,
becoming the city’s first African-American mayor.
In his fourteen years in office
Mayor Palmer has established numerous innovative
programs in Trenton.
He started the “Trenton Loves
Children,” which provides free immunizations for
preschool children; he helped Trenton become home to
the country’s first federally funded Weed and Seed
anti-drug program; he helped bring the Family
Development Program to the city, which assisted over
2,000 people get off welfare and gain employment; and
he created the “Cleaner Vision” program, to help
keep streets and neighborhoods clean.
In June of 2003, Mayor Palmer was
named President of the National Conference of
Democratic Mayors.
He is also President of the New Jersey Urban
Mayors Association, and a trustee of the U.S.
Conference of Mayors.
He is a recipient of the “City
Livability Award,” a prestigious honor given
annually by the U.S. Conference of Mayors to recognize
mayors for exemplary leadership in the development of
effective programs that improve the quality of life in
their cities.
Mayor Palmer and his wife, Christiana Foglio-Palmer,
have a daughter, Laila Rose Palmer.
